About Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates developed his work from a strong personal experience in fitness.

Unhealthy as a child, he studied many different forms of exercise and self-improvement systems. On his way to developing the Pilates Method, Joseph studied anatomy and developed himself as a body builder, a wrestler, gymnast, boxer and skier. He also worked for many years with dancers and as a trainer in self-defence for the Hamburg police force.

Joseph created the 'Classical Matwork' from what he believed to be the most effective components of all these disciplines; creating a series of exercises that built strength without adding bulk and combined the perfect balance of strength and flexibility.

Many of the classical exercises originally created by Joseph Pilates can take many years to perfect and may well be beyond the capabilities of the average body. Body Control Pilates have therefore broken down these classical exercises to make them more accessible, allowing clients to build safely and effectively towards more demanding dynamic exercise as and when they want to.
